From Generation to Generation:
Senior Volunteers Provide Food for Schoolchildren from Poor Families.
Every school day, more than 1,000 children in Jerusalem go through the day without a proper lunch.
This is a reality that has gotten even more critical of late, with the serious economic downturn that has taken place in the country - and in Jerusalem, Israel's poorest city, in particular - in the past several years.
In 2003, a group of Beit Frankforter volunteers, all grandmothers, decided to take action to change this situation by doing what they do best - making food for these young children! This group of dedicated women began coming in early each school day to prepare sandwiches, a different kind each day. The sandwiches, together with a piece of fruit, are then delivered to the schools where they are handed out to needy schoolchildren.
After only one year in operation, the grandmothers are already preparing 600 sandwiches a day that are distributed to 11 Jerusalem schools.
Without the dedication and commitment of these wonderful grandmothers, hundreds of schoolchildren would go hungry each day. The volunteers get tremendous satisfaction out of knowing that their work brings immediate and much-needed results to so many school children around the city, enabling these youngsters to receive a nutritious lunch that helps them maintain their concentration and attention in class.
